Next up was Dunedin, the second-largest city on the South Island. While it may not be a hiking hotspot, it more than makes up for it with historic landmarks, trendy cafés, and stunning beaches with plenty of scenic walks.
The drive from Kaka Point to Dunedin took us just over 1 hour and 20 minutes. While it’s not a long trip, we still found a few great spots to stop and break up the drive. If you’re not in a rush or trying to kill time before check-in, here are a few places worth checking out:
Where to Stay in Dunedin?
We stayed at The Terminus Apartments, and it turned out to be a great choice for our one-night stay in Dunedin. The space was stylish, comfortable, and well-equipped — everything we needed for a quick city stopover. The only slight downside was the parking, which wasn’t the most convenient. Still, we’d happily recommend this place to anyone visiting Dunedin for a short stay.
What to Do in Dunedin?
1. Tunnel Beach
This short walk is a must while you’re in Dunedin. The return track takes about an hour and offers some absolutely stunning coastal views along the way. At the end of the trail, you’ll reach a dramatic sea-carved natural arch — and if the tide allows, you can head down through the tunnel to the secluded beach below. It’s the kind of place that looks like it came straight off a Windows wallpaper — seriously beautiful.
2. Long Dog Cafe
This cozy spot is perfect for a relaxed breakfast or coffee. Not only is the food great, but you’ll also get to enjoy ocean views — and if you’re lucky, you might catch surfers riding the waves right in front of you.
3. Moeraki Boulders Beach
This unique and easily accessible beach is famous for its giant spherical boulders, estimated to be around 65 million years old. It’s a great photo stop and fun to explore at low tide.
4. Allans Beach
Looking to spot wildlife? Allans Beach is a fantastic place to see sea lions and seals in their natural habitat. Just remember to keep a respectful distance — they’re wild animals after all.
5. Katiki Point Lighthouse
While the lighthouse itself is worth a visit, the real highlight here is the colony of fur seals lounging nearby. It’s a peaceful spot with amazing coastal views and great for wildlife spotting.
6. Vanguard Specialty Coffee Co.
A fantastic place for lunch. The food is fresh and flavorful, the staff are incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming — definitely worth a stop while you’re in town.
Final Thoughts on Dunedin
Dunedin might come across as a bit industrial at first glance, but give it a chance and you’ll discover its charm — from scenic beaches and cozy cafés to impressive historic architecture. If you’re exploring the South Island, don’t skip it. Spending a day or two here is a great way to enjoy a taste of New Zealand’s city life without sacrificing natural beauty.
