La Mauricie National Park

Île-aux-Pins Lookout

Our next stop in French-speaking Canada was La Mauricie National Park, located near the Laurentian Mountains — just a 3-hour drive from Mont-Tremblant.
This park covers a vast area of 536 square kilometers of lush green forest, dotted with 150 lakes and countless ponds.

Park Entrance Fee:
  • Daily Admission: $9 per person
  • Parks Canada Discovery Pass:
  • Cost: $75.25 (valid for 12 months)
  • Includes: Unlimited access to 80+ national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas across Canada
  • Where to Buy: Available online or at most national parks, including La Mauricie
  • Tip: If you’re planning to visit at least 7–8 Parks Canada sites during your trip, the Discovery Pass can save you money.

Where to Stay

We chose to stay at Maison Cadorette, which was a great base for exploring La Mauricie National Park. It’s conveniently located close to the park entrance.

The host was incredibly friendly and helpful — since our next stop was Québec City, she even recommended an alternative scenic route instead of the usual (and rather boring) Trans-Canada Highway. It made the drive so much more enjoyable!

  • Just a heads-up: there are only a few dining options nearby, and they’re not open every day. Be sure to check with your host in advance!

WHAT TO DO IN La Mauricie National Park

1. La Solitaire (Lac‑Solitaire) Trail

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: 6.1 km (3.8 mi) loop
  • Estimated time: 2–2.5 hours depending on pace
  • Elevation gain: 396 m
  • Start Point: Riviere a la pêche

The Lac‑Solitaire Trail is a scenic loop that takes hikers through lush forest to Lac Solitaire, with several well-placed viewpoints along the way. Don’t miss the iconic red Parks Canada chairs at one of the lookouts — they offer a beautiful bird’s-eye view of Lac aux Chevaux.

2. Le Passage Lookout

This iconic lookout offers a breathtaking panoramic view of La Mauricie’s lush landscape. It’s one of the most popular scenic spots in the park.

  • Heads-up: As of May 23, 2025, the lookout is closed for reconstruction and is expected to reopen in 2026. Make sure to check current conditions before your visit.
3. Île-aux-Pins Lookout

Another stunning viewpoint, this lookout offers sweeping views of the lake and surrounding forest from the edge of Île-aux-Pins. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for a picnic or a quiet moment in nature.

Conclusion

We only had a day to explore La Mauricie National Park, but it truly has so much to offer. Whether you’re into hiking, canoeing, kayaking, or just want to enjoy a refreshing swim in one of its many lakes, the park is a perfect escape into nature.
